I think it’s pretty safe to say that all of our little ones, and our not so little ones, are finally getting fully ensconced back into school. It seems like the school year is starting earlier and earlier every year. When I was in school, a million years ago, we always knew when the first day of school was, the day after Labor Day.
The last week of August, Mom would take my brother and I school shopping. We’d get new clothes, new shoes, a new coat, pretty pencils and binders, and when we were really little, a new lunch box. I used to love school shopping. It was probably the thing I missed most when I graduated. No more trips to the mall with Mom. I still miss those days, but now it’s because I miss my mom, not the mall or the shopping.
But, I digress. These days, since I have no children of my own, I find out when the first day of school is when I depart for work and have to stop on the corner for the big yellow bus. “What? It’s the second week of August! How can it be time for school already?”
Some mornings I arrive at the intersection before the bus, others, the bus gets there first. I don’t mind waiting behind the flashing lights because I love to watch the little kiddies climb out of their booster seats in their mommies’ cars and run excitedly for the bus, backpacks flopping on their skinny little backs, mambo hair ribbons and too-big shoes encumbering their process but not their enthusiasm. I sit and smile, knowing that these days will soon be gone for those little tykes.
So in honor of a new school year, I’m posting my September rendition of Take It Or Leave It. Here’s a reminder of the rules: Post your guesses in the comments section below. The person with the most correct guesses is my winner, but you must post another comment in the comments section, acknowledging that you are a winner, in order to claim your prize. It’s that simple. Unclaimed prizes will be forfeited after one week from my posting of the correct answers.
Because I’ve completely disconnected for a few days, this month’s edition of Take It or Leave It will come with a couple of adaptations. Number one – I will not be posting the answers until next Monday, September 22, 2014, which means you all have exactly 7 days to post your guesses. The winner will have until Thursday, September 25th to claim their prize.
Number two, due to the topic, once again, we’re going to play in the past tense. So did I or didn’t I partake in this school days activities?
1. Regularly wear dresses to shop class.
2. Almost fail algebra.
3. Smoke cigarettes under the bleachers.
4. Run a mile in less than 6 minutes.
5. Sing with a rock band in the annual talent show.
6. Start a fire in chemistry class.
7. Attend every single home varsity basketball game.
8. Dress up like Madonna for spirit week.
9. Get a speeding ticket in front of the high school.
10. Forge a note from my mom.
What do you miss about school? What was your favorite or least favorite thing about school? Did you ride the bus? Inquiring minds what to know.
Word of the Day: Edacious
Fun fact about me: This week I’m checking something off my bucket list.

You didn’t attend every home basketball game…

I am guessing no the #4 and 8. The latter mainly because I think you are my age, maybe a year or two older, and Madonna got big maybe a year after I graduated. 🙂
I rode the bus until senior year, and it was the worst! I liked seeing my friends at school, but hated just about everything else. So glad that’s behind me!

As for me and my high school memories –
1. Shop class was a fav!
2. Hated math as my teachers were boring but passed algebra
3. Smoked joints under the bleachers.
4. Run a mile in less than 6 minutes. Yup – I was also a jock.
5. Partied with a rock band after the annual talent show. Female band!
6. Didn’t start a fire in chemistry class.
7. Never attended any single home varsity basketball game. They sucked.
8. Spirit week never happened at our school.
9. Never got a speeding ticket in front of the high school. Had sex in car.
10. Forge a note from my mom. Never, I just cut class!

Those darn school buses totally mess up my getting to work schedule at exactly 8:30 a.m. (I’m so not a morning person and get up as late as humanly possible). I hated riding the things too. Don’t. Miss. School. But…yay! Another take it or leave it! My random guesses:
1.Anyone who wears sparkles on an airplane would wear a dress to shop class.
2. I bet some cute boy distracted you, right? Yes (and I see the “almost” there).
3. Nah. No death sticks for Patricia.
4. That would be impressive! I say yes for Patricia “The Flash” Rickrode.
5. Totally.
7. Sure.
8. Who didn’t dress up like Madonna?
9. Snicker. Yes. Wait, is this a trick question? Wasn’t there a previous TIOLI that said you never got a speeding ticket? My brain is refusing to reveal the answer.
10. 50-50 here…I’m waffling…going with a no.

Like you, I still get excited about the start of the school year. This quiz! Too hard! I’m going to say yes to everything but you smoking under the bleachers. I don’t believe you almost failed algebra but believe you thought you’d fail. (Didn’t we all at one point or another?) And that fire in chemistry class? It was an accident.

Okay people – thanks for playing during my absence. I am back from my Alaskan cruise (the item I checked off my bucket list) and am trying to get back into the swing of things. I know you’ve all been waiting patiently so here’s the answers:
1 – I absolutely DID wear dresses to school, which included shop class all four years of high school.
2 – I DID almost fail algebra. I got “D’s” for the first 3 quarters and a “C-” the last quarter. I think my teacher felt sorry for me and finally improved my grade just because I tried so hard.
3 – I did NOT.
4 – I DID
5 – I did NOT. While I was in the talent show 2 years in a row, I never sang or performed with a rock band. I was a solo act.
6 – Did NOT (sorry Coleen)
7 – I DID because I had a crush on a really cute Freshman boy who made the varsity team his first year of high school and played varsity all 4 years. Yes, I had my crush from afar for 4 years.
8 – I did NOT.
9 – I DID and it was the most embarrassing thing, too.
10 – I DID forge a note. I had been out sick and forgot to bring a note from home with me. My first period teacher wouldn’t let me back into class with the note from my mom. So, rather than bother my mom, I just forged one. Hey, my mom was going to vouch for me anyway. Saved her a trip all the way into town. She thanked me for my quick thinking. (Yes, my mother aided and abetted.)
So there you have it.
Phil, it sounds like you were a hoot to hang out with in high school. You and me could have run a really fast mile side-by-side.
Susie got 5 right
Coleen, Jennette and Coleen – each got 6 right.
Pat got 7 right and is my winner. Pat you have until Thursday the 25th to claim your prize. Post another comment here and I shall forward your gift card.
Thank you everyone for playing. Have a fantastic week!
