A lot of people have been asking, especially the locals and our guests: “Why Mississippi?”

Well, here’s how it happened. My husband and I have always wanted to expand our stock contracting business. We raised bucking bulls for the PBR and the rodeo circuit. In California we didn’t have enough land to raise even one bull and even if we could afford more land, which we couldn’t, we couldn’t afford the feed or the water. That meant that in order to broaden our business, we had to look elsewhere.
For several years, we’ve wanted to move to North Carolina, where one of our partners in the bull business lives. After we decided it was time to “try again,” we went to North Carolina and looked for ranches. But, nothing met our fancy and on the way there my husband told me that I needed to think about what I wanted to do for work so we could check out the job market at the same time.
You see, I’d already decided that 30 years in the legal profession, slaving as a paralegal, most of the time for a family law attorney, was enough. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, was ever happy, including the boss. And in family law, nobody ever wins. It’s a lose, lose, especially for the kids. I had had it.

So, as I sat there on the plane wracking my brain for possible new careers, I decided that I wanted to do something where people were happy and not expecting miracles from me. I did not want to be chained to a desk. I had worked one summer at a B & B in California and I rather enjoyed it. I’ve always loved entertaining and setting a pretty table with sparkling dishes; crystal, silver, china. I mentioned that to my husband and that’s when we decided that maybe we could do both in North Carolina; buy a ranch, raise cattle, and take in overnight guests.
Well, one thing led to another and we came to the conclusion that running a bed and breakfast was probably going to be the best solution for us since we both needed a place to live and we both needed a job. We’d kill two birds with one stone so to speak.
However, North Carolina didn’t have any inventory that was affordable, so we ditched the idea of North Carolina and explored other venues. Mississippi had the most inventory in our price range and because my husband is a history major and a huge fanatic about the Civil War, we decided that Vicksburg might be a good place for us.

Turns out, it was. We’ve not had any regrets about our decision and while we miss our horses and bulls and ranching lifestyle, we’ve adapted very well to being innkeepers. We’ve met some amazing people, made some incredible new friends and opened up a whole new world of possibilities.
So folks, there you have it. That’s why Mississippi. We wanted to expand our ranch and be stock contractors so we bought a bed and breakfast in Vicksburg. Go figure.
Never limit yourself people. Think outside the box. Be open to possibilities and possibilities will fall into your lap. I promise.
The change is exactly what I needed. Watch this short funny video and you’ll know exactly why I had to get out of the legal profession. Enjoy.
Can you relate to this video? Have you ever turned your life completely upside down and loved it? Ever started out down one road, ended up on an unexpected road and found a pot of gold? Does change scare you? I’m dying to know so let me have it.
Word of the Day: Tramontane
Fun fact about me: I’ve never been a big fan of being politically correct.

I still think it’s so awesome you switched gears after 30 years and went for what you want – you go, girl! BTW, I agree with you about family law…bleh. I’ve found the one sure happy circumstance that bring people into a lawyer’s office is adoption. Yay for adoptions and happy faces!

Yes you are correct, but in California those were speciality lawyers who only did adoptions. Unfortunately, that is not who I worked for.
Thus, a B & B in Vicksburg!! Score one for me.
Thanks for your encouragement and support. I appreciate knowing folks are pulling for me.

Sometimes a change for the better comes from an idea out of left field. Seems like it worked for you. Good luck!
Itβs been a great blogging year! Looking forward to reading more in 2016. Happy New Year!

I’ve been so inspired by watching you make your dream happen this past year! And a little envious, in a I-want-that-too way. Right now it’s snowing here in Ohio, and while living here does have its good points, winter is not fun. We would love to live somewhere else, but that won’t happen until we’re done paying for college. Your point about not limiting your dream to exactly what you pictured is a great one – I dated someone I didn’t think was “my type,” and have now been happily married to him for over 20 years. π
Oh, and +1 for “not politically correct!” π
Have a great year, and keep sharing those stories and pics of your lovely B&B!

Thanks Jennette. I didn’t realize how “stuck” I even was until I got unstuck. I feel so liberated and every day is a new experience.
I hope that your “some day” comes soon. College has awesome rewards as well so don’t feel “down” because of that obligation.
Hang in there. Next year plan a trip to Vicksburg in January. We don’t have snow and our house is cozy. Plus, you and I can be politically uncorrect together.
More pictures and stories to come.

Wow, that’s awesome! I have a great quote that I keep pinned to my dashboard. “You are exactly where you need to be.” (Sorry, don’t know where the quote came from.) To some people, that might mean staying exactly where you are. But to me, it means that when my life takes a trip down a side road, there’s a reason for it, so relax, enjoy, and hang on for the ride. π

Thanks Suzanne. It’s not really a new life, it’s just a new chapter of the same old life, but it has been challenging, rewarding and fun. I hope you’ll plan a trip over here some time and check out my new place for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
Happy new year to you and all the best to you and your family!

Sounds like this is just what you needed. Your other job was a huge downer. So glad you escaped from the rat race! You have the perfect personality to run a bed and breakfast. Much healthier lifestyle, too!
I’m amazed at the turns my life has taken the past two years. I never could have seen myself where I’m at now. It all started with becoming an independent consultant for a health and wellness company, then a 28-day detox that helped me get healthy and kick my sugar addiction and lose 20 pounds. Unbelievable. Then the thirst for more knowledge, which has led my oldest daughter and me to becoming certified health and wellness coaches. I’m taking the second course now. Amazing stuff. I love the direction my life has taken. Lots more material to write about, too!
Happy New Year! Once I get my businesses off the ground, it would be cool to stay at Baer House and get some of the other WANAs and hang out, do some writing sprints, maybe some critique sessions. How cool would that be?

Sounds like you took the fork in the road that lead to great things as well. Good for you! Keep it up.
And, I’m actually working on putting together a writing retreat (of sorts) here at the inn. I think that would be an absolute blast. Stay tuned.

Beautifully written, with a few details I hadn’t known before. I’m so glad you’re settling in so easily and making friends in a brand new place. An author I recently met is travelling to MS this year on book research, and I gave her the details re: Baer House. I know she will mention me if/when she books! Miss you!

Perhaps you could travel with her next time?
