Do you make up your mind about some new experience before you even experience it? Do you take one look at a roller coaster and say, “no thank you,” before you even ride it or watch it whiz along the track to learn it’s pattern? Now, if you are prone to motion sickness, I think you make the appropriate decision not riding the thing, but . . . if you’ve never ridden before, how do you know you’re not going to like it?
Do you always put ketchup, or Tabasco sauce, or salt on your food before even tasting it? Do you just assume you’re not going to like curried eggs and therefore not even try a bite just because you don’t normally like curry? How courageous would it be to take a bite BEFORE making up your mind about it’s tastiness?
Here at the Baer House Inn, we offer delicious breakfast fare, but sometimes we get those, let’s call them weird, people who ask for ketchup or some other condiment to slather all over the yummy creation. Sometimes people walk away from the breakfast table without even taking one bite of something. How strange?
I always ask if people have allergies so I know I’m not presenting them with something that’s going to make them sick or break out in hives, yet sometimes they don’t even take one teeny bite. I’ve got to admit, it’s a little disheartening, but I can’t take it personally because everyone has unique taste buds.
Take my dad for example, he puts salt on everything. Ev – ri – thing! He puts salt on fruit, on toast, on peanut butter, on dessert. How weird? Not to mention he has extremely high blood pressure. You think? Likewise, my husband lots of times puts hot sauce on everything. Now, after several years of marriage (and me griping) he will at least try the dish first, but oft times he ends up dousing his meal with hot sauce. Last week we had a lady ask for ketchup for breakfast that was topped with hollandaise sauce. Really? Ketchup and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin? Strange.
But, who am I to judge? I just find it a little odd that people make up their mind about something without even giving it a chance first. My husband used to never ride roller coasters because he thought they were scary. Now, he loves them. Well, maybe love is a little too strong a word, but he rides them and doesn’t scream like a little girl any more. (Sorry hunny, but you used to.) He was brave and gave it a shot. Now, I don’t have to ride alone.
Is that so much to ask people? Just try it. Do it.
How about you dear readers – do you pre-determine whether or not you’re going to like something or will you at least try it first? Do you consider yourself a brave person because of it? Or are you fine being a chicken and not knowing any other way? Come on, fess us, I won’t hold it against you.

Fun fact about me: I’m not too keen on high places, but I love the challenge of overcoming my fear when I’m someplace high.

Good morning – a new week is here. I am pretty open, but I do balk at some new experiences. As for ketchup and hot sauce that’s not me, at least at first, but I don’t need a compass to plot a course. Have a great week!

Oh, I like that you don’t need a compass to plot a course That’s a super power in and of itself. Thanks for stopping by on this busy summer solstice. Enjoy the rest of your ketchup-free week. Unless you have French fries, then ketchup is a must have.

I’m afraid I’m one of those people you don’t like – well, maybe don’t understand. I know what I like and what I don’t, and my attitude (admittedly a bit irrational) is that if I try something new I might not like it, so why not stick to what I know I like? So I watch a lot of movies and tv shows over and over. Same with books.
Part of that may have to do with my ADD. Most kids with ADD seem to outgrow it, but mine seems to work the opposite. It wasn’t a huge problem when I was a kid (of course, no one had ever heard of it back in the 50’s), but it seems like the older I get, the shorter my attention span gets.
And I can’t think of any reason to put ketchup on ANYTHING unless I’m trying to soften meatloaf that’s overdone.
Just accept that some of your friends are weird.

Dave – I think most of my friends are weird and that is why I love them all so much. You’d have to be a little bit weird to like me anyway so it’s all good.
So, I guess if you ever come to visit me I’d better find out what you like to eat for breakfast before I actually cook it right? Don’t want to give you curried eggs or maple bacon waffles if you’re just going to stare at them on your plate. No red velvet French toast for you.
Thanks for visiting and sharing your weirdness. That’s what I love about my followers, they don’t hold back.
Have a great week.

Regular bacon very soft -eggs or omelet soft to runny – hash browns – very white biscuits – heaven!

Actually, that’s a big part of the weight loss success. Large breakfast, medium-size lunch and very light supper.

I’m totally okay with trying things out first, but it’s hard to beat what you know you already like (at least, with food). My hubby puts sweet chili sauce on lots of things. I have to say I’m a little more skeptical with food…once it’s on your taste buds, it’s hard to get off. I’d never make it on one of those dare shows where you have to eat disgusting things to win the prize. I’m sure Baer House serves up only deliciousness!

Aw, shucks ma’am, we do try to please the palette here at the Baer House. And, I know what you mean about getting some yucky taste in your mouth that you just can’t shake. That’s no fun at all. Usually a good swig of tequila cures that for me, but hey, tequila might not always be available. Carry your own, I say, but you know, whatever.
Sweet chili sauce has a place in the grand scheme of things, but not on everything. Like ice cream for instance, that’d just be gross. But on pizza? Maybe. I’d for sure give it a shot. Definitely on sushi.
Hey, I’m the girl who puts dill pickles on her tacos so what do I know?
As always, thanks for stopping by. Have a fantastic week.

I’d like to think I’m somewhat adventurous, but there are some things I know I won’t like. Any food that’s full of green peppers or celery is a definite no. Never had the least desire to try bungee jumping either – just the thought of throwing myself off a bridge, tied by my feet, gives me a headache. I don’t like heights in general, but like you, I’m willing to try them, within reason. And bring on the red velvet French toast!

Oh – now see – bungee jumping – no. No, no, no, no, no. A thousand times no.
And I’m with you on those bell peppers, although I have been known to order something that has them in it. I just pick the peppers out. Usually I avoid them at all costs. Any kind of peppers, jalapeno, chili, peppercinis, all of that stuff. Yuck. But, that’s because I’ve ALREADY TRIED THEM. I’m talking about something you’ve never ever had even a tiny bite of. I will avoid things I know I won’t like because I’ve had it before. Different scenario.
So, how’s the home alone thing going for you? Enjoying yourself? I know I would.

This was a great post Patricia! Good subject. I can’t imagine what you run into when trying to feed your guests. Everyone has different taste in one way or another. I am trying to recall what I dislike that I’ve never tried before. Hmm. *Snaps finger* I’ve got it. Tofu! I cannot make myself even try the stuff. I don’t know if it’s the texture? It’s a little rubbery you know. Nope, can’t go there. And for a certain, you will not find me bungee jumping! Hell no! Although I love roller coasters. 🙂

Karen – you and I will ride roller coasters all day long then and stay far, far away from the giant rubber band rides. That said, I do like the Tower of Terror ride which is sort of like bungee jumping, I guess, except you’re sitting down.
Tofu, if fixed properly, is not bad. I prefer it toasted, sort of like a crouton, but not as crunchy. I don’t care for the soggy stuff. I’ve had it several ways and it’s not as bad as you might think. I say, give it a shot.
Thanks as always for stopping by and sharing our thoughts. I love hearing from other people with regard to my weird blog topics.
Have a great weekend! I hope you’re safe from the fires out there. I sure don’t miss that about Cali.
