Here at the Baer-Williams House I’ve noticed an interesting and curious trend; people don’t sleep between the sheets.
Say what?
On many, many mornings lately, I’ve gone into a room after a guest has vacated to turn over and clean the room for the next guest, only to discover that the guests haven’t slept between the sheets, but rather between the blanket or comforter and the top sheet. Basically the bed is still made underneath the comforter or bedspread. What’s up with that?
I’m not sure if I should be offended or not. Do people think I don’t wash the sheets between guests? I do. Every single time. Are people too hot? If that’s the case, wouldn’t a thin cotton sheet be cooler on top of you than a thick cushy comforter or bedspread?
It’s so weird stripping the sheets off of a perfectly made bed. I mean, I still have to wash the entire set of sheets, I can’t just wash the top sheet and put it back on. So, what’s the deal?
Maybe people think the tucked in top sheet is the bottom sheet and I’ve forgotten to put the top sheet on? Really? Do they check? I find it so strange.
I ask you dear readers, any thoughts on this curiosity? Do you sleep between the sheets or on top of the top sheet? If so, why? What’s the reasoning?

Fun fact about me: I can’t sleep without covers even on the hottest night.

You know, my husband loathes the top sheet. Loathes it! He hates getting all tangled up in it so much, that we just use the fitted sheet. I don’t know if that’s what your guests think too, but it’s a possibility. I’m sure you wash the sheets. I trust you. 🙂

Okay, I get the tangled up part, but does he sleep with nothing on then? No covers I mean (don’t go to the other place because I really don’t want to know THAT answer.)
It seems like people here use the comforter or the blanket so wouldn’t that cause the same entanglement issue? I’m such a light sleeper I never have to worry about getting tangled up. That much activity would wake me up for sure.
Thanks for stopping by. Good luck with the blog tour and book launch.

Do you rent to teenagers? My boys have been known to sleep on top of the comforter rather than put the clean sheets on the bed. But if the bed is already made, I don’t know.

We get very few teen-agers or kids. We don’t really like to have kids because of all the antiques and breakables and such, but we do allow families. I just think the whole thing is weird. I get it if you’re taking a nap or something, to just lay on top of the covers, but at night? Not so much.

Patricia, this post made me LOL – I sleep between the sheets, but my 21yo daughter is like your guests! She says she just doesn’t like sleeping under a sheet, and just uses the fitted sheet with her comforter. I would think that would just make the comforter get dirty faster, but oh well. And like you, I can’t sleep without covers, no matter how hot it is!

That’s so strange because I would think a comforter would be too warm. That’s the first thing my husband throws off is the comforter. He usually just sleeps with the sheet over him. I’d rather have a heave comforter on top of me with the air conditioner turned down to 50 degrees than sleep in a comfortable room with no covers. I know, I’m strange, but, hey, what can I say.
And, yes, we do wash the comforters and blankets quite a bit, but not nearly as much as the sheets.
Thanks for leaving your thoughts. Have a great week.

That IS strange. Just think. If not for the ownership of your new B&B, you would never have known. This has been a very educational experience thus far. Personally, I prefer to sleep between the sheets. Call me crazy but it’s just how I roll. And it’s got to be cotton. Don’t give me any microfiber/polyester sheets. People are buying them left and right, and yet the material cannot breathe. I don’t know. I just don’t get it.

Yup, between the sheets for me too. That’s the only way to sleep. I do prefer cotton sheets as well. They launder so much better too.
Thanks for stopping by. It’s nice to hear that there are still some “normal” people out there in the world. Maybe we’re the old school folks, but any other way of sleeping is strange to me.
And, yes, I’ve learned a lot about human behavior working here.
As always, thanks for stopping by.

I’m old school–between the sheets. And turning the AC down and using more blankets is perfection. I seem to sleep better with a cold nose. I believe that blankets & comforters don’t get washed every single time, so using the sheets guards against someone else’s “dirt.”

I must have gone to that same school because that’s exactly how I like to sleep. I wash all of my bedding here at the inn fairly regularly, but definitely the sheets get washed more often than the other stuff.

At home, my wife and I sleep between the sheets at least partly to keep from getting the blanket or comforter so dirty. In motels we sleep between the sheets because I’m morally certain they wash the blankets and comforters once each election year.
By the way, when I saw your title, first thought I had was “why is Patricia writing a blog about sex?” lol

Oh those misleading, yet catchy, titles, right? Double meanings and dirty minds will wreak havoc on the best of intentions.
I’m glad to know that you are also from the old school of sleeping between the sheets. This is a new phenomenon to me.
And, by the way, my other bedding gets laundered quite regularly so please feel fresh and sanitary when you visit.
Thanks for stopping by.

Soooo… the sheet thing. I grew up in Melbourne (Australia) where it was cool/cold. We never had a top sheet, just the duvet/doona. I think due to the cool night temperatures. Now I live in Brisbane and the climate is more like that in MS. I have a top sheet because it is warm at night and I don’t need the duvet, but I need * something * covering me. Hence kicks off duvet and use only the sheet. I guess if you’re not used to having the top sheet you may not even realise it’s there?

I thought it might be a cultural thing but, nope, people from right here do it too. I think maybe they’re just too lazy to pull back the sheets. I’m with you though, I have to have something covering me at night. I can’t sleep without something covering me.
Thanks for chiming in. I love to hear what other people think.
