We all have our own individual definitions of freedom and freedom comes in many forms.
I’m pretty sure on a large scale we all immediately think of the “big ones,” the ones we are guaranteed in the United States Constitution as far as speech, press, being able to bear arms, etc.
It is not my intent with this post to get into a political discussion. It is my intent to share with you, a form of freedom that I didn’t even realize I was missing until recently.
You see, when we left California, almost two years ago, I had been driving a leased car that was about due to go back to the dealer as the lease was near it’s end. The timing was actually quite nice since we were set to leave only a month before my lease expired.
We brought with us to Mississippi the car my husband had been driving. Shortly after our arrival, it became apparent that we really needed a truck because we had no means to haul anything, and it felt like we were always hauling something. So, we traded in the 2013 Subaru for a GMC Canyon truck. We love the truck even though it’s bright red and not our preferred color.
Anyhoo, about 7 months ago, my husband accepted a job he was offered, which meant he would no longer be working with me at the inn, but rather at a different location. Yes folks, that meant he took the truck to work every day. Thus leaving me . . . well . . . carless. I haven’t been carless in like, oh I don’t know, 36 years.
At first it wasn’t really that big of a deal. Being “stuck” at home wasn’t so bad. I mean, I am a writer and what a better excuse to sit my butt down and write right? It’s not like I can go anywhere. Well, I can go places, but I’d have to walk, which isn’t so bad except for the rain and the heat and the hills. And I’d have to carry everything with just my own two hands. So, not really a viable option. (The woman in the picture below makes it look like struggling with all that stuff is enjoyable, but we all know, it is NOT.)
Well, as time went on, it became apparent that I really do need a car after all. (Refer to the picture of the woman above.) There’s hardly a day goes by when I don’t need to run somewhere; the supermarket, the bank, the drug store, the pet store, and the list goes on. I was always having to rely on my dad (who lives around the corner) for transportation IF he didn’t have somewhere else to go or something else to do. And, he always carries around lawnmowers, weed eaters, gallons of gasoline and oil and paint buckets and other such crap stuff, in his car so it’s always full of dirty yucky equipment and gross smells. Not to mention the seat is always filthy and I need to put a towel down before I get in.
Well, not anymore my friends! No sirree, not anymore. I have my FREEDOM back.
I am now the proud owner of a new-to-me vehicle. That’s right. I can come and go as I please, when I please, in a sparkly clean, fresh-smelling awesome car. Freedom is a good thing.

Now before you go thinking I getting above my station driving around in a shiny red Mercedes Benz, let me say, it is USED. It’s a 2013 C250 with 66,500 miles on it. But, it is in pristine condition. Only one tiny ding and one tiny chipped paint area on the outside. Nothing on the inside. Super squeaky clean. (That white spot on the hood, next to the emblem, in this photo is just a reflection.)
The best part? It was well within in my budget and we got a really good interest rate. Score!!
Freedom – it’s all it’s cracked up to be.
When was the last time you got a new car? How long have you ever gone without having transportation of your own? Have you ever owned a Mercedes?
Word of the day: Quivive
Fun fact about me: I’m really learning to like red cars.

your own wheels are indeed a freedom maker… when we were kids my mom and dad shared a car and it wasn’t until we lived in Venezuela that we got a second car – a blue VW Beetle. When we returned to the states we – my parents – got two cars a Chevy Impala and a blue VW Beetle. Dad drove the VW and the Impala was the family car. When mom and dad split and dad moved away the VW remained parked until I got my license and it became mine. I drove that car until it died on the highway home from college in May ’82. Replaced it with another blue VW Beetle a year later…. cars = freedom. Have a wonderful free week. Peace.

I didn’t realize how much I missed a car until Corey went to work. Having a car at my disposal is liberating.
I also had a beetle. A 1969. My first car. Had it 4 years before I got my Mustang. Sometimes I still miss my bug.
Thanks for visiting. God to see you.

Congrats! Dear hub got a new car this weekend, subaru outback. He’s lovin it, especially the (still very strange to me) assisted cruise control. I don’t know that i like a car braking/taking over for me. A control/freedom thing, perhaps. Your car looks fun and very freeing, I hope you get much enjoyment from it. I’m not on the qui vive for a new car for myself, but I would consider a test drive of a cute, red car like yours! Hope you have a great week!

Thanks Coleen, I am enjoying the new wheels but there are a lot of bells and whistles to figure out. I definitely have to read my owners manual.
And, no, no assisted driving please.
Thanks for visiting today. Have a great week.

Good use of qui vive, Coleen. You stole my thunder. My new Dodge Durango has the assisted cruise control, and I agree with you. I’ve always thought when you’re going down an incline with a reasonably open road ahead of you, you should let gravity accelerate for you to gain a little time and save a little fuel. The Durango slows itself down in that situation unless I put my foot on the accelerator to override it – which I sometimes do.

I’m thinking maybe red is your new signature color. 🙂 I’d hate to be without a car, knowing if I had to go somewhere I’d be hoofing it or required to ask someone to pick me up. No thanks! I’ve had my car for about 12 years now, and I still love it. It was one of those awesome, unforgettable Christmas presents…sitting in the garage with a big red ribbon on the hood. Hubby still whines about trading in his Corvette for it, but I believe the trade was completely worth it!

Wa, wa, wa. Jack the whiner. Getting you a new car was so worth the trade.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day.

Gratz on the new ride – red is the BEST! 😀
I hate not having access to a car, preferably mine. I think I’ve gone maybe a couple days at most, when mine was in the shop. Luckily, there was usually an extra available from family if it was more than that.
My red Camaro is now 8 years old and I still smile every time I get into it. May you enjoy your new one as much!

Thanks Jennette. I really like my new red car. It seems to be the perfect color for this particular vehicle. And I do smile every time I get in it because, well, it’s mine and I can go where ever I want to in it.
Thanks for visiting. I like that we both drive pretty red cars.

I’ve had to share a car with a wife a couple of times years ago, but the last time I had no car at all was before my junior year in high school. Of course, cars were a new invention when I was growing up. lol
Last time I bought a new car? December. Traded my 2009 Ford Escape in and bought an 2017 Dodge Durango, which has significantly more room in it than the Escape had. Finally have GPS without having to prop my iPhone in front of me. I know – everyone else has had that for years, but I’m just catching up. I love it and often use it even on familiar routes just to see how far I have to go.
BTW, like Coleen, I’m not on the qui vive for a new one.

New cars are fun. This one is used, but still, it’s new to me and it has lots and lots of extra features that I have no idea how to use yet. I still haven’t hooked up the blue tooth for my phone or the GPS thingey. There a whole computer in the dashboard that I have yet to explore. It’s kind of intimidating.
But, I’m having fun with the keyless entry and push button start. And the sunroof. That’s fun. One of these days I’ll check out some more of the features
Thanks for stopping by and visiting. I love seeing all the comments and people using my words of the day!

I had a little giggle when I saw that it is red!
Congrats on the car. Always exciting to get your own.
My hubby and I have one car (a utility, which I think in the USA you call a truck). This is used in bad weather, or whenever we need to pick up a lot of items (shopping) or big items (garden things, furniture) or if we are going some place together. Occasionally we need to work out a schedule when we both require the vehicle on the same day!
(The rest of the time we each have a motorcycle to ride around. They are cheaper on insurance, registration, gas and parking.)
