It’s no secret that writers love books. Most are book hoarders if you want to know the truth. Books are our crack. My love affair with books began at a very young age. I blame my mother. She used to read to me every single night even after I was more than able to read by myself. It was our nighttime ritual.Â
She used to take my brother and I to the library every week, where we each got our very own library card and had to be personally responsible for the books we checked out. It was a big deal. We’d each take home the maximum amount of books allowable by our local branch. And we read every single one of them before it was time to take them back. Books were very special and my mother encouraged both my brother and I to read, read, read.
So, I guess you could say I’m an addict and my mother was my dealer. But, I digress.
Since I’ve been writing, I’ve discovered that all writers I know also have another secret addiction: office supplies. That’s right, we have scads of office supplies surrounding our work spaces. We love blank journals and pretty pastel notebooks. Glitter pens? Manna from heaven to us. Stickers, cute erasers in assorted colors, bright colored pencils, everything an author needs to maintain a peaceful work environment you’ll find among our most prized possessions. Blank notebooks stacked in tidy even rows next to a basket of pens in assorted colors grace our bookshelves. A pretty dish full of bright colored, plastic coated paperclips sits next to a equally glorious box of awesome matching colored binder clips in assorted sizes. It’s magical.
Non-writers don’t get it. It looks like Office Max blew up in our personal space, which irks the non-writer in the family. But to us? To us, it’s Eden; a safe, comforting, and relaxing place to let our creativity flow freely among the necessary supplies to keep us energized and happy.
Oh sure, our usual and most oft used implement is the laptop, tablet or desk-top computer, but those other products are absolutely necessary for us to create the stellar manuscripts we do. Without the surroundings, the writing lacks depth and feeling. Well, that might be a bit of a stretch, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I do use my journals more often than the average Joe. And who can use a journal with an ordinary pen? Not a writer, that’s for sure.
How about you dear writer readers, do you have a vast and assorted arsenal of office supplies in your writing space? And you non-writers, do you hoard books, office supplies or some other oddball thing? Do you think it’s strange that writers also have a strange fascination with office supplies?
Word of the Day: Ytterbium
Fun fact about me: I also have an amazingly large stash of paper bookmarks on hand. If there’s ever a shortage of paper bookmarks or a bookmark emergency, I’m ready to assist in any way necessary.

Early start with reading… check. Tons of books now… check. Good stash of office supplies? Yup. Also tons of bookmarks… guess I must be a writer! 😀

Oh my gosh, you’re exhibiting all of the symptoms – I’d venture to say you are a serious writer! And a good one at that!
Thanks for stopping by. I knew my writerly peeps would get it. Hope things are well in your world.

I must be a writer anomaly because I have zero cute paper supplies! Wait…that’s money I could spend on books or music, so nope. 🙂 My mom used to read to me too, and I read to my daughter, and we’re all readers. It’s good to keep addicts happy! Have a great week with all your fancy office supplies, Patricia!

What!?! No cute office supplies? I shall have to send you some. You don’t know what you’re missing out on. Of course if you don’t like to be surrounded by “stuff” then that’s a bad idea. We’ll compromise, I’ll send you an awesome pen.
Thanks for stopping by. Despite your odd absence of office supplies, I’d still classify you as a writer. A darn good one, too.
Have a great week.

Me – office supplies? Nah. All I have is 2 desks with 4 drawers each and a 6′ tall cabinet and a few other places to store them. I, too, love to read, but I’m such a slow reader I only read things that are of extreme interest to me, and I read the same books over and over, since I know they’re interesting.
I ordered a large supply of Ytterbium but when I discovered it’s magnetism isn’t very strong, I shipped it back. I was going to eat it to make my personality more magnetic, but it didn’t work. LOL

All that space and no supplies? Get thee to an Office Max/Depot my friend. Countless awesome things await your discovery and purchase.
I guess office supplies are not for EVERY writer – just the weird ones.
And, lay off the Ytterbium. One never knows how much of that a digestive system can handle. (You’re goofy.)
Have a great week.

Office supplies! Me, my wife, and my daughter are office (school) supply hoarders! Love notebooks, too….. recently switched to a digital and erasable (via a microwave) notebook. I am really giving it a spin and trying it out, but it’s my addiction to office supplies that drove the experiment… and by the way Ytterbium is an element – it’s on the periodic table of elements #70. like David’s comment, too. Have a great week and keep reading, writing, and collecting office supplies. Peace.

I knew there was a reason we clicked Clay. Office supplies. Who’d have thunk it? There’s no shame in hoarding office supplies. Clearly, only the most intelligent and prepared people have a bounty of supplies on hand for any given occasion.
I hope you like the new erasable notebook. Sounds kind of weird, but let me know how it goes.
Have an awesome – almost back to school – week.

I am here – working on the classroom, unpacking boxes, hanging posters, and all sorts of stuff that takes time and patience and OFFICE SUPPLIES! Each year I stock a box for each table full of markers, pens, colored pens, and such to make the work go smoothly and avoid the ‘I forgot my…. in my locker’ excuse to get out of class. A couple of years back I won $250 to use it was awesome. 12 more days, then a real schedule, again.
