Well – today’s the big day. The day we’ve been hearing so much about. A day no one has seen since 2009. A day not to be repeated for another two years (according to Google, if you can believe Google). Can you feel the anticipation? The sky goes dark. Temperatures drop. Birds and animals go quiet. For those of you who’ve been living in a cave, today there will be a total eclipse of the sun in certain parts of the United States. In most states, there will only be a partial eclipse, thanks to the fickle new moon, who only wishes to travel in a straight line across the middle of the nation.
Here in Vicksburg, I think we’ll see like an 80% eclipse sometime around 1:30 p.m. if we remember to venture outside and look up.
But don’t look directly at the sun! How many times as a kid did we hear our parents warn us about staring at the sun? I don’t know about you, but I remember my mom uttering those words at least a dozen or so times when I was growing up. She undoubtedly had to say it more than once because I was a stubborn child who did not always heed the advice of my mother (or listen).
Anyway, this used to be the only affordable way to view an eclipse:
Remember those days? Everybody staring heavenward with a box on their heads? What an odd contraption that aluminum foiled pinholed box was. I’m told you can also try viewing this event with this simple kitchen gadget:
Nowadays, it’s easy peasy to get your hands on a pair of these special viewing babies:
I still have the 3-D glasses I got for free from my special pre-release debut of the last Hobbit movie. I wonder if those’ll work. Maybe I’ll wear those with my colander and see what happens.
I hear folks are flocking to Oregon (the supposed optimum viewing location), causing havoc for small towns not prepared to handle the huge influx of people. Gas stations are running out of gas. Grocery store shelves are empty. Hotel rooms are $500 a night. You’d think it was the apocalypse, not an eclipse. Call me crazy, but I think I’ll just stick around here with my colander and 3-D glasses and hope for a better opportunity from my own back yard in 2019. No need to travel to parts unknown to experience a six minute freak of nature in my opinion.
But hey, if you’re one of the crazies determined to enjoy the ultimate experience, don’t forget your special viewing eyewear, And a whole bunch of patience if you’re headed to Oregon. And don’t forget to post your pictures so I can see what I missed.
Happy eclipse day dear readers. How are you spending today? Got your special glasses? Ever make a viewing box?
Word of the day: Ambisonics
Fun fact about me: I’ll probably forget to go outside today.

Good morning……. it’s truly gonna be a great day. Forecast for here is cloudy to partly cloudy. It doesn’t look appear as though I am going to be able to use my cool eclipse glasses… but I am taking them to school with me. It’s my first official day back at school! Just adults for the first three days, then the students on Thursday. Looking forward to a great year. Hope you get out to see the eclipse. Have a great week!

Yes it i going to be a great day. This is the second day in a row we haven’t had overcast skies and rain so we’re all pretty excited here in Vicksburg about that. That has nothing to do with the eclipse; we’re just excited it’s not raining today.
Enjoy the school year. I hope you get some fantastic kids who appreciate the information you shall impart to them.
Until next time, have fun. Enjoy the eclipse.

We’re supposed to get 89% here in Dayton. DH & I are going to use his welding mask, which is rated to handle that intensity of light (some older ones aren’t). luckily, I’m working at home today. Don’t forget to go outside!

A welding mask – that’s clever! If I put that on I’d breath heavily and say, “Luke, I am your father,” cuz that’s the kind of silly I am.
Enjoy the phenomenon my friend. Thanks for checking in. Have a great day!

We’ll be getting 98% in Bend Oregon. We bought the glasses to wear. Not long now.

I hope you capture some cool photos, Kate! Sounds like Oregon’s getting pretty much the best view in the house.
Enjoy those glasses!
Nice to see you. Have a great week.

Yep, I’ve been going in and out, watching as the moon swallows the sun (with appropriate eye protection, of course). It’s pretty awesome. I’m a terrible photographer, but I’ll try to get a good picture for you!

We’ve been getting some cloud cover all morning so every time it gets darker in the house I run to see if it’s clouds or eclipse. So far, just clouds. Looks like they’re gaining in strength and number as well so perhaps I won’t need my 3D glasses after all. I’ve got the colander ready just in case.
Thanks for stopping by. I shall await a photo attempt. Good luck.
As always, have a great week.

Did you get to see much in the end? 😀
I managed to borrow some glasses so got to look a little…but it wasn’t a total eclipse up in Canada. I thought the best part was the shadows. Under every tree you could see thousands of teeny eclipses!

Unfortunately I didn’t really “see” anything other than a lot of photos posted on various social media and internet sites. We just had a weird, sort of orangey sky for about an hour. And, I had a massive headache all day, which is very unlike me, so there must have been something wonky with the alignment of the planets.
Anyway, there’s always next time right?
Thanks for stopping by. Always nice to see some new faces.
