People have some strange eating habits. Well, some things are not so strange, but folks can’t seem to eat certain things unless those things are prepared or served a certain way. Example: ketchup. Some people can’t eat eggs or potatoes or whatever without ketchup. They won’t even try the food without the salty condiment. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a lover of ketchup, but if ketchup is not offered or available I will make do without. Like French fries – I’ll eat them, but sooooooo much better with ketchup.
And speaking of French fries, how do you eat yours? I never even thought about how I eat my fries until someone sitting next to me said, “that’s how I eat my fries, too.” Say what? How can there be more than one way to eat fries? “I eat them one at a time,” she said. “My sister grabs a handful and stuffs them all in at once.” Hmmm. I never even considered eating more than one fry at a time. Dipped in ketchup of course.
Now, I know we’ve all had those discussions about the correct way to eat an ear of corn; round and round, or end to end. I’m an end to end girl, but apparently, round and round is the more popular way. Who knew? And ice cream cones – same thing. Do you lick up and down or round and round? Me? I do both, depending on how fast it’s melting.
And then there’s the dilemma with meat; cut it all up into bite-sized pieces at once before enjoying, or cut one piece at a time and savor before cutting another? Is there some kind of rule about this? In “polite company” do you just observe what others do and follow their lead? I usually cut a few pieces, set my knife down, enjoy what I’ve cut, then repeat. Am I doing it wrong?
Pizza eating is another awkward defining moment in a person’s life. Fold it in half and stuff it in or try to finagle the wilty pointy end in your mouth before stuff starts sliding off? Or, gasp, cut it with a knife and eat smaller pieces. It’s all so confusing if you stop and think about it. And then there’s the condiments – hot pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, ranch dressing, anchovies. So much to consider when trying to enjoy a cheesy meal.
Now, I can say, I do have an interesting pancake eating technique. I’m a dipper. I don’t like the syrup to soak into my pancakes and make them soggy. Yuck. No thank you on the soggy pancakes. I pour my syrup in a little puddle on my plate and dip each bite into the delicious sweetness. That way I get to enjoy the sweet cakiness and the gooey syrup in two different textures. I’ll admit that may be a bit weird, but hey, what can I say, I don’t like soggy pancakes.
What strange eating habits to you have? Are you a dipper? A ketchup slatherer? A pizza folder? Come on – fess up. I told you about my weird pancake eating habit. Don’t leave me hanging here.
Word of the Day: Quassia
Fun fact about me: I hate when people throw salt or ketchup or hot sauce on food before even trying it first.

Back when I was growing up, French fries were actually fried in real grease. They were soft enough and moist enough you didn’t need ketchup or other things to mask the dryness. Just salt. And I did usually eat them one at a time. In fact, I even eat peanuts one at a time. Makes them last longer.
Since you mentioned ketchup, to me it’s sorta like quassia – something I never use. To me, all it does is completely overwhelm and hide the taste of whatever you put it on.
Hope you’re feeling better, Patricia.

I eat my peanuts one at a time too! I like to enjoy each crunchy nugget individually.
So, no ketchup at the breakfast table when you visit the inn. Just all the delicious naked goodness on your breakfast plate. Got it.
I’m feeling a little better today, but I have to treat again right after Christmas. I take whatever each day throws at me. It’ll all be over soon. (At least that’s what I keep telling myself.)
Thanks for visiting and, once again, incorporating the word of the day.

I can’t think of a weird eating habit for me, although I don’t like certain foods to touch each other on my plate. Like when sauce overflows and contaminates my vegetables. Or whatever. I think I have some very boring eating habits. 🙂 I hope you have a great Christmas!

Oooohhhhhh – nooooooo. Foods cannot touch each other on my plate either. I have to separate each item with my fork so as not to contaminate the other. No mixing of flavors unless I choose to do so. (Maybe it’s a control issue. Hmmmm.) So, no, you’re not weird there. You’re perfectly normal. At least in my world. If I want mixed flavors, I’ll make a casserole.
As always, thanks for spending a few minutes of your day with me. I hope you have a great week.

Oh my goodness, lots of food for thought in this post. Sorry, couldn’t help it! I eat fries various ways. Sometimes one at a time and sometimes three or four at a time. I love ketchup on my fries, too, but tomatoes are one of the foods that don’t like me, so I can’t eat it very often. I eat my corn end to end, too, for the most part, but sometimes I’ll turn it and take a bite out of another part of the cob just because I can. Never gave it much thought before this!
I’ll eat pizza any which way. If everything is falling off it, I’ll pick parts off and eat them, or even use a fork. I love the crust, too, unless it’s hard.
Seems like I read years ago it’s not proper etiquette to cut up all your meat into pieces before eating it. Well, if you’re a mom, you ignore that rule and cut up all of your little kid’s meat. I think the way you do it is proper etiquette. Cutting up a few pieces at a time and then going back and cutting more is supposedly A-Ok.
I’d rather my pancakes aren’t soggy, but if they are, I’ll still eat them. My weird food habit is that I eat cold meat, like leftover steak or chicken. Delicious. I’ll even eat my leftover vegan Chipotle bowl cold, right out of the fridge. I think I’m low maintenance when it comes to food.
You’ve been in my thoughts. I even woke up the other night thinking of you. Keep envisioning yourself as healthier than ever. Yes, you will get through this. Merry Christmas!

Sounds like you’re just crazy, Lynn. Most of the time I eat however I feel like it because it’s usually just me and the hubs in front of the TV so anything goes, especially when it comes to pizza. If I need to use a fork for my pizza, by golly, I will. And, I don’t mind cold meat either. Usually I put it on a salad or in a sandwich, but sometimes I’ll gnaw on a cold rib right out of the leftover bin.
Thanks for your kind words. I’ll get through this challenge one way or another. It’s been yucky, but mostly tolerable. Lots of people have it so much worse. I appreciate your support.
Thanks for visiting.

Of all things – I like sour cream & fries!
And ketchup & cornbread!! Cut my pizza up to bit size pieces!! Don’t like for my food to touch! I have little pockets in my stomach so my food just never mixes!

Now Joelyn, sour cream on fries makes perfect sense. I mean lots of people put sour cream on baked potatoes; and what is a fry after all, a fried potato. No weirdness there. Ketchup and cornbread? Hmmm. Sounds strange but I put pickles on my tacos so what do I know.
And I absolutely agree, foods must never touch each other on the plate. One bite of each flavor at a time. That’s how God intended.
Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful holiday.
