Here at Casa Rickrode, otherwise known as The Baer-Williams House, I like to decorate for the holidays. And by holidays I mean, all holidays. It’s nice to see a little bit of holiday cheer throughout the year tucked into a corner or on the mantel, at least in my opinion.
I put out snowmen in January even though it rarely snows in Mississippi. I put out Valentine and Mardi Gras stuff in February, St. Patrick’s stuff in March, Easter stuff whenever Easter is nigh. I set out the red, white and blue for 4th of July and autumn colors for the harvest season in September. October gets Halloween decor, November gets pumpkins and pilgrims and, of course, December is reserved for all things Christmas.
But, what does one do in those in between months? The months with no holiday: May, June, and August. What’s an innkeeper to do?
I’ve got a small collection of birdhouses that I’ve decided to display in May and some sunflower things that I’ll put around the house for August. But, that still leaves June, which I guess can be a prequel for 4th of July but then what do I put out on July 5th?
Pinterest suggests beachy things for summer. I don’t have any beachy-type decorations and it’s not really my style. It has also been suggested that I go with a tropical motif, which has some possibilities but again, I don’t have anything in my myriad boxes of holiday decorations that’s anywhere close to tropical. I guess a trip to Hobby Lobby is in order.
Tell me dear readers, do you decorate for the holidays? If so, what do you put around your home during those awkward non-holiday months? Inquiring minds want to know.

Fun fact about me: I always thought it would be fun to be an interior designer/decorator.

Actually, I never thought about this.. but May brings races and flowers – Kentucky Derby and Indy, June brings summer vacations and August brings back to school…. maybe pencils and school supplies? We do decorate, I mean my wife decorates and I help, especially with Christmas. Hope all is well, spring is beginning to break out and the end of the school year is approaching quickly, much too quickly. Have a wonderful week. Peace.

I guess I could go with the Kentucky Derby theme – big hats, horse stuff and froo-froo drinks. I’m sure I could find some decorations to fit that theme.
Back-to-school? Probably no so much here at the inn. Especially since we don’t have children and most our guests are traveling sans children as well. It’s a cute idea though. I’ll ponder.
Thanks for the ideas. And thanks, as always, for stopping by. Happy almost end of the school year to you.

Working on 19 days of science and history and 23 more days of students – before itโs all history! the last four days are the hardest – 8th grade promotion (graduation) is the last day!

I’m not much a seasonal decorator, but I do make the exception for Christmas. However, I do appreciate other people’s decorating efforts, and I bet your guests do too. Since that’s definitely not my area of expertise, I have no suggestions to offer, but the Kentucky Derby suggested by Clay sounds fun. ๐ I bet there are lots of local celebrations for inspiration too. In my hometown, they have a strawberry festival every June, complete with a parade and the world’s biggest strawberry shortcake. So there…June can be strawberries. ๐ Have a happy week!

Strawberries for June – hmmm? We’d be more inclined to have crawfish or pecans or perhaps even peaches instead of strawberries, but I could find something along those lines. I’m going with birds, bird houses, and spring flowers for May. Visited Hobby Lobby this afternoon and came home with some fun stuff.
Thanks for visiting today. Have a great rest of the week.
