Here at the Baer House Inn, I like to set a pretty table. We use china and crystal and cloth napkins for breakfast every day. We try to add special touches for special events. Something about a pretty table makes the meal seem that much better, at least in my humble opinion.

Unfortunately, some people don’t appreciate the finer things in life. Sometimes I find my china coffee cups outside. Really? It’s china. I understand that people like to sit on the porches – hey they’re nice porches – but please don’t leave your cup out there. Bring it back down to the dining room. But, that’s an entire blog post itself. What I want to talk about today is cloth napkins.
When we set the table we fold our napkins into pretty little bundles and set one at each place, like this:

Pretty huh? But something happens when people sit down. At some point during the meal, napkins go from this:
to this:
What the heck? I’m not serving tacos or crab legs or BBQ ribs or anything really that requires that you use your fingers to eat. Except the muffins or scones. So why in heaven’s name do the napkins end up this way?
Some of them are so bad I think perhaps at some point during the meal they snuck out and checked the oil in their car, using my napkin to wipe the dipstick. I understand that sometimes a bit of coffee may slosh over and that would be a good thing to use a napkin for, to clean up that spill, but goodness, sometimes the entire napkin looks like it’s been soaked in coffee. I have to use half a bottle of pre-wash stain remover spray on some of these babies.
Some have so many different colored spots on them I’m wondering if they’re supplementing what I’m serving for breakfast with something they’ve brought themselves. How can something, blue, brown, red, yellow, purple and green end up on one napkin? And for crying out loud, do people not know where their mouths are? Are they eating with their fingers? What’s up?
The absolute worst thing to get out of a napkin is – drum roll please – lipstick!! Lipstick is nearly impossible to scrub out of my napkins. Which brings up another question: Who puts on lipstick to walk downstairs to eat? Seems like a waste of makeup. After you finish eating seems like a better time to gloss up those lips to me, but whatever. I see a lot of lipstick on my napkins.
How do you folks use your napkins? Do you delicately wipe your mouth or do you use it as a cleaning rag? Do you appreciate a well-set table? Do you prefer cloth napkins over paper? Do you put on lipstick before you eat? Inquiring innkeepers want to know.
As always, thanks for visiting today. Your thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated.
Word of the Day: Noumeon
Fun fact about me: Here at the Baer House we launder and iron our own napkins.

I guess if you’re gonna use china and crystal and such you almost have to use cloth napkins. Glad I don’t have to. I use old plates and silverware (NOT silver). Insulated mugs to keep coffee hot and Bubba Kegs for ice water. And PAPER napkins. I don’t like the feel of cloth napkins and don’t think they get things as clean as paper. Besides, no one would want me blowing my nose on a cloth napkin. lol
BTW, I looked up “Noumeon” but didn’t know any more about it after looking it up than before. Something about a “noume.” ??

You know David, sometimes I don’t understand the words either, but I like how they sound. Thanks for taking the time to educate yourself, though. We’ll all be clueless together.
And, my husband and I use paper napkins as well (or paper towels). We often use paper plates, too. But the cloth napkins really dress up the dining room table. Image is everything in this business.
Thanks for visiting today. Have a wonderful Memorial Day!!

Your table looks fabulous! Well done! Sorry about the napkin disasters … one of the prices of operating a classy establishment. Don’t stop! I’m a believer in cloth napkins and some of our kids keep some at their homes just for when we visit. They know better than to offer me a … shudder … paper towel at the dining table! Warm wishes to you for Memorial Day! Were you busy this weekend?

Thanks Patricia. I intend to carry on my beautiful table setting despite the pigs. I guess some people didn’t have mommas who raised them right.
We had a busy Memorial Day weekend, yes. We have a family reunion so all rooms were filled. It was nice to see so many people here for the reunion on Saturday. I think there must have been close to 75 people in attendance.
Thanks for visiting. Always good to see you.

People can be so inconsiderate! Which is why I never, ever, ever use cloth napkins. But then again, I don’t have any people I need to impress, so…and for the record, I’d never leave anyone’s cup outside on the porch, China or not. People, sheez. I applaud your patience at putting up with them!

Most people have manners and act appropriately but occasionally we get someone who’s just – crass. It happens.
I’m sorry you don’t have anyone to impress. Setting a pretty table once in a while builds character. You should try it sometime and freak your family out.
Take care and enjoy the rest of your week.

First thing I thought when I saw the napkin on the left was that it looks like my husband’s overalls when he’s been working on cars! I use cloth napkins for holidays, but mine never look like that. Guess my family isn’t that dirty LOL. I really do have to wonder what those people are eating/doing!

I seriously had one napkin that had black streaks and looked like motor oil. I have no idea what the person used that napkin for. It didn’t wash out either so I had to throw that one away. Even bleaching didn’t extract it.
A lot of people say they don’t use cloth napkins, but I’ll bet just about everyone has eaten out at least once in their life where a cloth napkin was on the table. What do those folks think that cloth square is for? Sheesh
Thanks for visiting today. So nice to hear from the “clean” folks. Have a great rest of the week.

Actually, I usually use the table cloth or perhaps the edge of the curtains. Of course I am kidding, but I believe our society has lost its manners and politeness. Incivility is rampant and it’s my way or the highway… personally I take the high road, it might be more difficult but its far less traveled and once there, you can cruise. I prefer a cloth napkin to a paper one and I don’t wear lipstick. What you see is what you get. School is almost done and I am looking forward to summer break… stay cool and collected and enjoy that new range of yours! Peace.

Thanks Clay. I like that you take the high road. I’ve seen you up there myself. It’s where I prefer to travel but, I must confess, I have diverted to the low road on occasion. I thought it would be a short cut, but nope, it was not.
And you are so right about people having no manners these days. Perhaps they should start teaching that stuff in school because kids don’t seem to be learning it at home.
Speaking of school, enjoy these last few days and have an excellent summer!
