A while back I blogged about not being able to find anything to watch on TV despite paying $600 a month for streaming services and having over 10,000 channels at our disposal. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but you get the drift. Finding a new movie or series sometimes takes some trial and error. Unless you’re looking for a little something to watch just for the fun of it.
Quite some time ago I came across a show on the National Geographic channel using my Disney+ app that I found fun and fascinating at the same time. Gordon Ramsey’s Uncharted! I don’t know if you’ve seen this show, but there were about 3 (maybe 4) seasons of it, I think, and they were all silly fun. The gist of the show is that Gordon Ramsey, I think most everyone knows who he is, goes to some exotic place and meets up with a celebrity chef from that place and then gets sent on a journey to meet with the locals to hunt and gather ingredients for a fabulous meal that will be created at the end of the show.
He has to use “the old ways” to access some of these things and it is a hoot to watch him shimmy up palm trees for mangos or try to catch a slithering eel with his bare hands in a muddy river. Some of the ingredients are absolutely gross, others are interesting. He is obligated to at least try every single thing he intends to use in his recipes. Sometimes he eats live bugs or raw meat or the insides of some weird bush or tree.
He is quite the outdoorsman and really a very funny guy, despite the image he portrays on his television shows. As the show culminates, he and the master chef he met at the beginning of the show have a cook-off and the locals – usually all the people who have helped Gordon along the way, sometimes state officials, etc. – are the judges. Sometimes Gordon wins. Sometimes not.
Here’s a little 5-minute peek of one of the episodes:
Anyway, if you get a chance, give it a try. I found it just thoughtless fun to watch. And I got a whole new respect for Mr. Ramsey as well as the basics that we take for granted here in our “developed” country. For example, when he was in Laos, everyone he met with lived in abject poverty and were forced to live off the land. Very humbling. Warning – when in Laos do NOT drink the moonshine. That’s all I’m going to say.
I also discovered a show called Critter Fixers about a couple of veterinarians in rural Georgia who provide medical services to basically any living creature except humans. These two African American doctors are a hoot and their camaraderie is so fun to watch. Everyone on the show seems to really LOVE what they do. Every episode is full of interesting stuff and great banter between the doctors and employees.
Some of the surgical procedures are a bit hard to watch, as I get squeamish with that kind of stuff, but it’s mostly about the bonding between the people and their pets and how these doctors try their best to save every single creature that walks through their doors, from Koi fish to 150-pound Burmese pythons, to alpacas, to eagles, to coyotes, you name it. It’s just another one of those silly feel-good shows to watch.
In fact, a couple of weeks ago I was feeling a bit under the weather and spent a couple of days in my recliner sipping hot lemonade, sucking on cough drops, and binge-watching Critter Fixers. I give it a two thumbs up if you’re looking for another silly fun show to watch.
Here’s an interview of the 2 doctors. Give it a watch if you’re interested. Their personalities come across really well in this clip.
Have you guys found any silly shows you like to watch? Any guilty pleasure shows? Do either of these shows sound like something you’d watch? We’re not judgmental here, let’s hear what tickles your fancy.
