This is a re-post.

About three years ago I wrote a blog post about some interesting things I had noticed about innkeeping and inn guests from my two years experience in the business. If you’re interested in reading that, here’s the link:  https://jansenschmidt.wordpress.com/2017/06/26/observations-of-an-innkeeper/

While it’s still sometimes hard to believe that we’ve been doing this for five and half years already, I am even more amazed that I continue to notice quirky and interesting things that happen frequently. Therefore, I present to you, Observations of an Innkeeper – Part Two:

I’ve been in the innkeeping business for a little over 5 years now and I am still amazed at how many times something totally new and unexpected happens. Just about the time I’m sure I’ve seen everything, along comes something completely new and – dare I say it – more weird.

Mary Poppins head up feet beneath youFolks it’s been slim pickings here at Casa Baer. I’ve been trying to keep my chin up throughout this pandemic but some days it’s really hard to find the silver lining. Since the beginning of March we’ve only taken in just a smidge over six thousand dollars. Usually we bring in double that each and every month, especially this time of year. We’re heading into our second busiest time of the year and are still getting more cancellations than reservations coming in. It’s heart breaking. (more…)

That’s right folks, you read the title correctly. I had some guests who simply – disappeared. They were here and then – they weren’t.

Owning a bed and breakfast joint may seem glamorous to some, like a lot of work to others, and downright stupid to another group. Let me tell you, it’s all of those things.

My life as an innkeeper is never dull. Most of the time my work is very rewarding. The average guest is very nice and respectful. And every day I see or hear something that makes me go:

bewildered-face

Being an innkeeper has challenges for sure, but there’s an amusing side as well. And an even larger amazing component that most people probably don’t even think about. (more…)

Here at the Baer-Williams House I’ve noticed an interesting and curious trend; people don’t sleep between the sheets.

I know what you’re thinking – bizi what? Biziversary. Yes, that’s a made up word. I thought of it all by myself, but I think it might catch on and some day make it into the urban dictionary.

Biziversary. Let’s break it down: part 1; biz, short for business – part 2; iversary, annual celebration of something important, in our case, the Rickrodes buying The Baer House Inn. That’s right – it’s our biziversary. We’ve owned The Baer House now for a year! (more…)

It’s been a busy week and I’ve been lax in getting my blog ready to post. I’ve been steadily forging through a jungle of edits on my manuscript and am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

So, in lieu of actually writing something witty and clever this week, I’ve decided to take the easy way out.

For those of you thinking of visiting the Baer House, I hope this virtual tour sways you to actually book a room. For those of you who can’t visit for awhile, enjoy this virtual tour for now, to whet your appetite for good things to come later.

For those of you who never plan on coming to Vicksburg ever, here’s what you’re missing.

Enjoy!

I’m curious to know where you all spent your spring break, Easter, etc. Leave me a comment so I can be jealous.

Until next week, stay safe and be happy.

So friends, I’m on the road this week, but I didn’t want to leave you hanging because I know you’re all looking for more info about the Baer House. Well, just keep on hanging in there. It’s a-comin’. And it’s fun, fun fun. There might even be a ghost story. (Oooooo the suspense!)

In the meantime, I wanted to share with ya’ll (I have to get used to saying that now) some very enlightening and entertaining instructional videos I’m been watching in preparation for my new venture. I found this one to be especially insightful. Until next week, enjoy!

Ever have a bad customer service experience? Let me hear about it.

I may be not as available as I normally am on my very active and very popular blog, so talk amongst yourselves. I’ll check in when I can. Ta Ta.

Word of the Day: Vina

Fun fact about me: People used to tell me I looked like Julia Louis Dreyfus. Watch the video again and I guess you’ll get some idea of what I look like. I can see the resemblance (if I was 20 years younger).
