I hadn’t even realized how much of a rut I was in until I got out of it. I am so glad that my husband and I decided to relocate to Mississippi. The move across country was relatively incident free and the transition into the Baer House Inn here as innkeepers has been a breeze. Except for some chaotic moments with shuffling boxes around to find clean clothes and particular kitchen utensils, everything has fallen into place. I’m not sure it’s the right place yet, but fallen into a temporary place at least.
For 30 years I sat at a desk and worked for someone else. Most of those 30 years were not torture, but it was definitely time to spread my wings and fly out of my “known zone.” I am now in my “unknown zone” and loving every minute. Sure, I’m tired and I’ve had a few brief crying spells (mostly because a certain someone has been mean to me), but all in all, I’m having fun.
I’m not overly impulsive; I like to plan most things out. But our decision to move to Mississippi sort of came out of left field. It was a strange set of circumstances that led us here, but I’m ever so glad we’re here. Vicksburg is a charming town with super friendly shopkeepers, wait staff, grocery clerks, etc. Everywhere we go, people are nice to us and wish us success in our new venture. It’s only been about two weeks, and already I’m starting to feel like this is home.
If you’re on the fence about making a change, I suggest you do it. Holding on to the mundane for the sake of security in knowing the outcome, is not a good reason to keep doing it. Just make the change and think positive and work hard. I’m pretty sure you’ll be surprised at the results.
How about you readers, have you ever taken a plunge of sorts? What big scary thing have you jumped into? Was it worth it?
Word of the Day: Yeuk
Fun fact about me: I didn’t think I’d enjoy getting up early, but it’s not so bad after all.

Wow great blog and just as I’m meeting with an editor to make a plunge into something new I wasn’t sure I wanted but had already decided to make the plunge and try it if for no other reason than something new. great post and so glad this move was the right thing for you.

You know Kate, nothing about this relocation ever felt wrong to me. I had a few moments of wondering if we were doing the right thing, but I never felt panicked or scared. It has always felt right. I’m sure that’s how it was for you too. You somehow just knew, on a deep level, that the decision is right.
Thanks for stopping by and being encouraged. I always feel encouraged when I see comments like yours. Thanks for your support.

Trying something new is always worth the risk!
When I first saw your photos, I thought you had taken them from Pinterest! Ha!
I only spent a weekend with Danny before deciding to marry him. I’m all about leaps of faith and leaping in general.

You are a true leaper, but then again I’m pretty sure you have good strong instincts as well. Some people instinctually feel stuff and I’ve suspected that
you are one of those persons for quite some time now based on your crazy adventures.
Thanks for stopping by. I ppreciate the support.

I moved to Kansas a few years back leaving California behind. It was the best thing my husband and I did ourselves. Enjoy your new home and I hope you have a retreat. Please let me know. Best wishes for your success in your new adventure/

Louise, please follow me on Facebook for more information about a possible retreat. I’ll have to crunch some numbers to see how expensive it’s going to be. I’m excited about possibly doing one though.
Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad were not the only ones who’ve made an exudus from California and are doing well.

I think it’s so fabulous that you saw an opportunity and went for it! I’m pretty set in my ways and I like a schedule and being organized, so doing something completely unexpected (at least something huge like a career change or moving) would have to be pretty phenomenal to drag me out of my comfort zone. For now, I can live vicariously through you! Vicksburg sounds like a decent place to be. 🙂

It’s a pretty cool place to visit, too. (hint hint)
I know what you mean about organization and comfort zone. This was truly something that I was just ready for. I knew the time had come to do something different, I just didn’t realize how much I needed the change.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week.

My husband and I left California four years ago for Bend, Oregon, The only thing i miss about California is our kids and Grandchildren. I’d give anything to have them living here near us. It was a big leap to take. And taking on the responsibility of my 89 year old mom. I was quite lonely for friends at first , but now have an awesome group of ten Bend writers we get together for coffee or tea once a month and for lunch once a month. The fishing here is great as are the beautiful mts. wouldn’t change that for anything. Congrats on sorting out your next chapter in life!

Thanks Diana. It was indeed hard leaving family and friends, but this was the right thing to do. And Vicksburg is pretty cool; kind of reminds me a little bit of Placerville.
Thanks for stopping by and offering encouragement. Your support means a lot.

As you know we relocated from California to northern Wisconsin a year ago June and, like you, we are so glad that we made the change. Living in the small town that my husband was born and raised in has given us a new lease on life. The people are so friendly and call me The Book Lady. I have received unbelievable support with my writing and I even caught a 20 small bass off our dock on the Tomahawk River. It’s taken a year to almost get organized due to a dislocated shoulder while packing, so I take it slow and get things on the wall and put away as I can. The one thing about our new community, nobody is in a hurry and nobody gets dressed up.
I wish you joy and happiness in your new venture. It is an absolutely beautiful inn and I can see you settled in the history of the place.

People here are so friendly, too. Everywhere we go we’re treated like friends. Nobody sees us an an outsider or a stranger. It’s kind of weird actually.
I know what you mean about taking your time unpacking. This is a big house and a lot of things needs to be moved around to accommodate all of our stuff, but we’re working on it. It’s just part of the adventure.
Thanks for taking the time to post a comment today. It’s always nice to see you.

I’m so happy to hear it’s all coming together for you. It’s scary to move halfway across the country and start an entirely new career. But I know you’ll be fantastic in it. Yes, I once took a huge plunge, and my life was remarkably changed for the better. There were some hard choices, but it all worked out in the end. Cheers to you!

Patricia, you are so inspiring! And your new hometown sounds lovely. I so want to visit sometime.
I am definitely in a rut. For the most part, not a bad one–I work for a good company, with nice people, and do unstressful work for good pay, but it’s still a rut. My problems are my health and the fact that I committed to paying for my daughter’s college–something I’m still so grateful my parents did for me. Maybe I can make a change in two years, when she graduates!
Continued good luck in your new venture!

There’s nothing wrong with a rut, if you’re happy in it. Being in a rut and being unhappy are the perfect combination for making a change. I’m glad I made it and I know you’ll know when the time is right for you as well.
Take care and thanks, as always, for your support.

My dear Patricia–I am thrilled that everything is falling into place for you there in Vicksburg! As you know, my life has been a series of “leaps”–moving to New York City for a new job, transferring to Seattle although I knew no one west of Ohio, getting married after 3 months of dating, going into business for myself. That’s about half of them. And most of them worked out fine. It’s been an exciting life so far, and I really wouldn’t change a thing. Those who fear they are in a rut might just think instead that it’s a groove…and could make a little change to “one groove over” without fear or heartache. Continuing to wish you greatest fortune in MS!

My change only came in at 250 miles, moving from my beloved Columbus, Ohio back to my un-beloved hometown of Toledo due to health emergencies. That was 15 years ago and I have now moved from my apartment of 15 years into a house, in an unknown neighborhood, but close to friends. (Family now gone or thousands of miles away). Even this is scary, so I cannot image a cross country leap. Mine is turning out slow (due to health) but happy (due to friends). The extra space, as in a basement and backyard, is great. A huge B&B will be a challenge, but even just “knowing” you through your posts I can tell you will make it. And yes, please redo those retched pics on your B&B’s website. Your pictures on this blog are miles better. Doing the photographing yourself will increase that site’s worth a million bucks. You have a good eye for photography and taking photos. Good luck with your leap!
