I don’t know about you, but I love shoes. Always have. I’m somewhat of a collector, or at least I used to be. Since high school I’ve had office jobs and since high school I’ve worn high heels. Used to be, the higher the better. Shoes make a statement and I was bold.
I love high heels because, well, for starters, I’m short. Heels give me height. High heels also correct my posture. I don’t slouch as much when I’m wearing heels. You know, balance and all. I know, it’s weird that I’m short and yet I slouch. It’s because I’m lazy. I have no core strength. Plus, I love how my legs look when I’m wearing heels. I had some awesome blossom shoes. Still do.
Since moving to Mississippi, I’ve ditched the heels. It makes no sense to wear them around the inn. I mean, seriously, it’s not the fifties any more; women don’t wear heels in the kitchen. Or when cleaning toilets. Or doing laundry. High heels just aren’t sensible any more for me. I no longer wear business suits or dress slacks, so flat shoes are better. However, I still have a closet full of amazing high heeled shoes.
Just for the record, I do not own any of the shoes in these pictures, but I sure wish I did. Aren’t they cute?
Let me tell you folks, it took a long time for my body to adjust to wearing flat shoes. You’d think it would be easy, but I had constant foot and leg problems for about the first year I was here. My Achilles tendon and the muscles in the back of my legs had been stretched too far the opposite direction so it took a while to even things out. Nowadays, I can barely wear heels. I slipped a pair on a couple of weeks ago to attend a funeral and the first thing I did upon arriving home was put those babies back on the high shelf in the closet. But, it’s hard to find really cute shoes with no heels and great arch supports. These are the only things that don’t hurt my feet.
Yeah, aren’t those gems pleasant to look at. Boring and ugly. But I make the sacrifice for comfort. That’s what happens when you get old. I’m now wearing ugly practical old lady shoes.
Which brings me to the point of this blog, sensible shoes; who really wears them? I mean besides old people like me? Nurses, waiters, people on their feet all day, usually wear sensible, unattractive shoes. Much like mine. Construction workers, law enforcement officers, firemen, all wear sensible shoes. Or do they?
Do you ever pay attention to what people are wearing when you watch TV? Women in particular? Female law enforcement characters in particular? Women cops who chase down bad guys and beat the streets for clues to solve crimes. Conjure up in your mind what kinds of shoes these women would wear.
Now, let me show you what Hollywood makes them wear:
It makes no sense people. Some of those heels would snap right off in a good chase. Pointy heels would get stuck in sidewalk grates or metal grate type stairs or chain link fences when climbing over. Not to mention they make a hell of a racket so sneaking up on someone is impossible. No woman serious about catching bad guys (or even an elevator door that’s closing) would wear these shoes! And would you walk around an outdoor (or indoor for that matter) crime scene wearing these ridiculous shoes?
I don’t know about you, but I always notice (and usually comment out loud about) the stupid shoes. Come on Hollywood, let’s get with the real world and have these professional, tough, kick ass ladies, costumed accordingly. Sheesh. Have some respect for the job.
So there, that’s my rant for today. Do you notice nonsensical footwear? Do you wear high heels? Where do you go for cute flat shoes?
Word of the day: Beseem
Fun fact about me: I’m trying to downsize my shoe closet. I really am. But it’s hard to get rid of my pretties.

I only wear heels to the RITAs. The rest of the time it’s all sensible all the time. My current shoe of choice are river sandals. Since it’s going to be over 100 all week, I don’t see that changing any time soon.

I love river sandals. I wear them at the inn too. So comfortable. Not the most attractive footwear, but dang sure comfortable.
Thanks for visiting. I hope to see you again at the next Ritas!

I wear the same kind of boring shoes you do. The older I get, the more I value comfort. I used to wear heels when I worked in an office with a professional dress code, but they went casual years ago, and everywhere else I’ve worked since then has been casual too – for which I’m thankful. So no heels for me, even though I’m short, too!

The boring shoes are the only way to go. And yet I continue to search for cute comfortable flat shoes. Some day I’m hoping to get lucky and find some that I like.
And, don’t get me started on “professional dress code.” Nobody knows what that is any more. Even lawyers don’t wear suits anymore, even in the courtroom. Ties, yes, but rarely a full blown suit. At least where I come from. Used to be, lady lawyers had to wear dresses or skirts, hose and everything to argue in front of the judge. Not any more.
Anyway, that’s another post. Have a great week my fellow short friend.

No self-respecting cop would wear heels on duty. Seriously, how dumb is that? I don’t usually pay much attention to shoes…but I love boots. Especially Doc Martens! And I do like sparkly, summertime sandals. I have the weirdest feet ever (honest), so the only heels I can wear are full-width heels. So sad for a short girl! 🙂

Right? Lady cops in heels would get laughed off the force. Not to mention how dangerous that is.
So, you’re not shoe lover, huh? Oh well, boots qualify as footwear so we’ll go with that. Last year I bought some really cute boots with flat soles. I wear them a lot when it gets colder. You and me, we’ll go boot shopping some day. Although, I remember you telling me something about your strange feet, so maybe not. We’ll just have a beer and talk about boots – how’s that?
Nice to see you. Have a great week!

So you’re – well, were – one of those! I’ve known several women, including one ex-wife, who were uncomfortable when they DIDN’T have heels on. Guess they never suffered through the weaning period like you did.
While 4″ heels don’t beseem a cop, you’ve got to remember that Kate Beckett, Brenda Johnson, Deedee McCall, Jane Rizzoli, Maura Isles weren’t there to be good cops (medical examiner). They were there to attract the male audience – which all of these certainly did in my case!

Oops – I forgot Jennifer Jareau! How could I do that after you put her photo on here?

Yeah, but I’ll bet, even in combat boots, you’d still tune in right? You’re not watching for their shoes my friend.
And I still have a lot of my shoes. I can’t bring myself to part with them. Some day I will, but not today.
Thanks for visiting. And don’t head south.

I wear comfy shoes everyday. I am on my feet from 8 until 3 concrete floors and walking around desks, books on the floor so anything but comfy sensible shoes is not a good idea. Now, there was a teacher who worked in high heels – everyday – I don’t know how she did it, but she was young, fresh out of college. There are days when my feet and knees have had it – put my feet up and and give those dogs a rest. It’s been a good start to the year, looking forward to the next 168 days! It’s gonna be a great year!

Yes, Clay, I’ve know a teacher or two who wear heels every day as well. I used to love wearing my high heels; wore them every day. I guess it’s just what you’re used to.
I wouldn’t expect to see you wearing heels in the classroom. Please stay in the comfy flats.
Keep on keeping on making the world a better place.

I’ve been catching up with your blog posts and just come across this one.
Firstly, yes, I pay attention to the shoes that women wear in tv shows. Im a big fan of Castle and the shoes that Beckett wears are ridiculous. How she runs and catches bad guys in thosw shoes sure beats me!
Secondly… Im a boots girl.
I used to wear thick high heeled calf high boots to dance clubs. Wore them until they fell apart.
Now that I’m older it’s still boots but flat heeled. My last vacation through the USA I walked everywhere in my rose embroidered Doc Martens.
I also wear these when riding my motorcycle. And at work. And pretty much everywhere except running events (and then it’s good quality runners).
So yeah… It’s vote 1 for boots from me. High heeled or flat.
I used to dream about owning a pair of those hip high, high heeled boots seen in Pretty Woman… but these days Im certain that more than 6 steps in those would send me head over said heels and Id end up with a broken ankle!
Damn. I must be getting old…

I just saw this comment, Mil. I can see you in boots. You’d be badass in boots on your motorcycle. Next trip to the US rent a bike and swing by the inn so’s I can take a ride. I’ll put on my boots and leather bomber jacket and we’ll give ’em hell for awhile.
Nice to see you. I love all your running photos on FB.
