Memorial Day means different things to different people. Lots of people attribute this long weekend with the beginning of summer. For some it’s a day off work, a day to sleep in, a day to cook outside. It’s a time for camping, boating, backpacking, backyard BBQ’s and more. Some people think of it as the last days of the school year. Some people look forward to super savings with Memorial Day sales at department stores. And that’s all good. But let us NEVER forget the true importance of this holiday – that we honor the men and women of our armed forces whose sacrifices allow us to live in a (still) free country.
Sometimes its hard to find the right words to say to a military spouse or parent or child, who has lost their loved one in service to this great country. Sometimes there are no words. “Thank you for your service,” seems so lame when speaking to the survivors. Say it anyway. Thank them anyway. Let them know that their loss was not in vain.
I found this poem on-line (I don’t think it’s illegal for me to post the link here since I found it on-line and I’ve provided the direct source, but if it is, my apologies.) This poem offers a glimpse inside the world of combat that a lot of people don’t know and will never experience of understand. I hope you read it with an open and honest heart and take a moment to silently thank the ones who didn’t make it home alive and the ones who did but are forever changed because of it.

Happy Memorial Day! And to our soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice – I salute you and I whole-heartedly appreciate your service and your sacrifice. May you never be forgotten.
Word of the Day: Nainsook
Fun fact about me: I love patriotic holidays because patriotic music is one of my favorite genres. It really is.
